In an effort to enhance the delivery experience, Amazon has revealed its latest innovation – augmented reality glasses for delivery drivers. These glasses utilize AI and computer vision technology to assist drivers in various tasks such as scanning packages, navigating with turn-by-turn directions, and capturing proof of delivery.

The primary objective behind the development of these glasses is to provide a hands-free experience for drivers, ultimately improving safety and efficiency by minimizing the need for drivers to divert their attention to a separate device.

It is important to note that the glasses are designed to activate only after the driver has parked, addressing safety and regulatory concerns. However, this advancement raises questions about the workload on drivers and the potential impact on their well-being, considering Amazon’s history of pushing technological efficiencies to the limits.

The wearable system, which was created in collaboration with hundreds of drivers, includes a small controller worn on the driver’s vest for operational controls, a swappable battery for extended use, and an emergency button for added safety measures.

Moreover, the glasses are designed to accommodate prescription and transitional lenses, with potential future features such as real-time hazard alerts and address verification to further enhance the delivery process.

Amazon has stated that the smart glasses are currently in the early stages of testing with hundreds of drivers in North America, with plans to refine the technology based on driver feedback before a wider rollout.

This announcement was made at Amazon’s Delivering the Future event in the Bay Area, following reports of Amazon’s development of consumer AR glasses to compete with other industry players.
