Legacy Apple TV: Exploring New Features and the End of the Line
Apple’s recent Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote focused on overall improvements like the new Siri AI, Apple Intelligence, and child safety features, but one platform was noticeably absent: the Apple TV. While tvOS was briefly mentioned at the beginning of the keynote, the lack of further discussion left many wondering about the future of the set-top box.
In recent years, tvOS updates have been relatively incremental, with the last significant upgrade occurring three years ago in tvOS 17. Since then, changes have been lighter, with the most notable feature being the Snoopy screensaver in tvOS 18. However, the absence of tvOS from the WWDC keynote raised questions about the platform’s future.
Despite the lack of information at WWDC, it is expected that Apple will unveil a new Apple TV 4K in the fall, along with a Siri-powered home ecosystem. One confirmed feature for tvOS 27 is Larger Text support for viewers with low vision. Other potential updates include smart downloads, redesigned Podcasts app, and smoother animations.
Developers can also expect improvements such as the ability to use localized asset packs to reduce app storage footprint and enhanced processing for HomeKit Secure Video recordings. However, the beta release of tvOS 27 indicates that older Apple TV models, such as the Apple TV HD and first-generation Apple TV 4K, will no longer be supported.
Overall, tvOS 27 marks a new chapter for Apple TV, with the end of support for older models and the introduction of new features and enhancements. Despite the lack of information at WWDC, it is clear that Apple is committed to improving the tvOS platform and providing a better viewing experience for users. Transform the following sentence:
