Porsche rules out electric 911 sports car

Porsche CEO Michael Leiters has confirmed that the iconic Porsche 911 will not be fully electric anytime soon. The 911, known for its rear-mounted flat-six petrol engine and manual gearbox, received its first hybrid powertrain in 2024.

Initially, Porsche had plans to gradually electrify the 911 and offer it as an electric vehicle (EV). However, due to slowing EV demand, this plan has changed. Leiters stated, “We will continue to invest in electric mobility, but a 911 will not become electric.”

The company had ruled out a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain for the 911 and decided to reintroduce internal combustion power for the upcoming next-generation 718 Boxster and Cayman sports cars.

The current 911 hybrid utilizes an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission to enhance the output of its 3.6-litre flat-six engine.

Leiters made these comments during an event hosted by German publication Auto Motor und Sport, following Porsche’s retreat from its EV expansion plans, led by the Taycan electric sedan and wagon.

The Taycan, Porsche’s pioneering electric model introduced globally in 2019, faced challenges due to what Leiters described as premature timing for e-mobility. Reports suggest that the Taycan nameplate may be discontinued.

Despite this setback, Porsche remains open to various technologies. The brand recently transitioned its best-selling Macan SUV to electric-only power, abandoning internal combustion versions entirely.

This shift coincided with a 10% decrease in global sales in 2025, prompting former CEO Oliver Blume to label the previous strategy as “unsustainable.” Plans for a three-row SUV exclusively electric-powered have been revised to include hybrid and internal combustion options.

Blume emphasized the importance of offering a mix of combustion engines, hybrids, and electric sports cars in Porsche’s lineup, tailoring the technology to fit each segment strategically.

In conclusion, Porsche’s stance on electric mobility for the 911 emphasizes the brand’s commitment to preserving the model’s heritage through a blend of combustion engines and hybrid technology. The strategic shift reflects Porsche’s adaptability in response to market demands and technological advancements.
