Hundreds affected in Bungie layoffs as "most of the Destiny team" departs

Bungie Layoffs: Destiny 2 Team Hit Hard as Studio Faces Reduction in Force

Following the conclusion of active support for Destiny 2, Bungie is facing a significant “reduction in force” which has led to the layoff of hundreds of employees. The impact of the layoffs extends beyond the Destiny 2 team, affecting some members of the Marathon team as well. Notably, studio co-founder Jason Jones and studio head Justin Truman are among those impacted by the layoffs.

The extent of the layoffs was revealed through the mandatory Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filed within the state of Washington. While Sony has officially noted 292 affected workers in the state, the actual number of impacted employees could be higher when considering remote workers and external contractors.

Chief Vision Officer Jason Jones, who has been with the studio since 2021, is among those who have been laid off. Additionally, Justin Truman, who took over as studio head last year, is stepping down according to Bloomberg reports.

An internal email from SIE Studio Business Group CEO Hermen Hulst confirms that the layoffs have affected “most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members.” Hulst emphasizes the difficulty of the decision and the extensive review process that led to the workforce reduction.

Hulst stated, “Our immediate priority is supporting affected employees through this transition by providing transition support and exploring opportunities within SIE and our global network of studios.”

Despite these efforts, many affected Bungie employees have taken to social media to share their experiences, including members of the Sandbox team, Raid and Dungeons team, Cinematics team, and more.

According to WARN regulations, employees should receive a 60-day notice, but Sony plans to implement the layoffs starting from July 9th and provide payment in lieu. Details regarding additional compensation packages remain undisclosed.

It is a challenging time for the renowned developer, and our thoughts are with all those impacted as they navigate this transition and seek new opportunities.
