Wimbledon adds IBM AI tools for live match coverage

The All England Lawn Tennis Club Enhances Wimbledon’s Digital Platforms with AI-Powered Features

In collaboration with IBM, The All England Lawn Tennis Club is introducing new AI-driven functionalities to enhance the digital experience of Wimbledon.

As the first-round matches kick off on Monday, these updates will be accessible through the Wimbledon app and wimbledon.com. They include an advanced Match Chat assistant and a novel feature called Key Moments.

The AI-powered features will also be integrated into IBM Slamtracker, which can be accessed via the Wimbledon app and wimbledon.com.

A media panel organized by IBM revealed that approximately 730 million individuals engaged with Wimbledon last year, resulting in 18 billion impressions across digital channels, as per comments from AELTC.

IBM’s ongoing collaboration with Wimbledon is part of a five-year digital transformation initiative aimed at modernizing the digital platform, centralizing critical services and data, and reducing technical debt and ownership costs.

AI-Powered Match Coverage Features

Match Chat enables fans to ask match-related questions in natural language. Users can inquire about the match progress and receive conversational responses based on live data, analysis, and historical performance data.

Match Chat responses may include relevant photos and videos, making it easier for users to get information without the need to navigate through statistics or multiple screens during a match.

Built on watsonx Orchestrate, Match Chat utilizes AI agents and models trained on Wimbledon’s editorial style and tennis terminology. It leverages live match data, analysis, and historical performance information to provide informative responses.

The new Key Moments feature is designed to identify crucial points and sequences of play that impact the match’s outcome. It offers AI-generated analysis to explain pivotal plays and changes in momentum.

Key Moments expands on Wimbledon’s Likelihood to Win feature, which calculates each player’s probability of winning throughout a match using current and historical statistics, expert insights, and match momentum.

Live Likelihood to Win integrates scoring data, match statistics, and expert analysis to provide continuously updated win probabilities for every singles match. Key Moments enhances this system by pinpointing key moments that influence the match’s direction.

Behind the Scenes of Wimbledon’s Platform Revamp

The digital enhancements follow a comprehensive modernization of Wimbledon’s app and website. This overhaul involved migrating Wimbledon’s content archive to a new architecture encompassing over 15,000 digital assets.

The archive comprises articles, videos, photos, and metadata links utilized across Wimbledon’s digital services.

The platform integrates watsonx Orchestrate for AI agents, IBM Bob for development tasks, and watsonx.data for data management across hybrid cloud infrastructure. The revamped app and website were crafted based on insights into how various stakeholders engage with Wimbledon’s digital offerings.

IBM Bob facilitated the creation of a knowledge graph mapping relationships within Wimbledon’s archive and supporting AI-driven workflows for the new platform. This tool analyzed around 15,000 online assets to understand the connections between articles, photos, videos, and metadata.

The archive mapping project, typically requiring several IBM specialists over months, was completed by a single engineer in four weeks. Around 15,000 assets were processed in 47 minutes, although response times may vary based on technical conditions.

IBM Bob played a crucial role in accelerating a decade’s worth of development work into nine months for the rebuild of Wimbledon’s app, website, and content systems before the 2026 Championships.

Ensuring Controls, Engagement, and Historical Accuracy

IBM and Wimbledon have implemented governance controls for the AI features to ensure accuracy. The design incorporates human-led processes, explainability, confidence scoring, and checks to minimize inaccuracies during live usage.

IBM Consulting highlighted the presence of a watsonx governance layer across the features, incorporating transparency measures and confidence scores linked to the underlying data, as reported by Insider Sport.

AELTC noted a 16% year-on-year increase in engagement across all platforms in 2025 and a 39% surge in myWIMBLEDON registrations over the past year.

IBM and The All England Club have collaborated for over 35 years, focusing on Wimbledon’s website, mobile app, and AI-driven digital services.
