Reimagining the BMW 1M Hatchback

A unique project transformed an E87 116i into a powerful machine by fitting it with a twin-turbo N54B30 engine from a 335i, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox.

The chassis underwent a major upgrade with a full E92 M3 rear subframe, control arms, and brakes, replicating BMW’s approach in building the factory 1M.

To address the absence of a hatchback variant in the 1M lineup, the rear widebody was custom-fabricated, combining elements from the 1M coupe design.

BMW’s limited production of the 1M left enthusiasts craving for more diverse options, prompting one owner to take matters into their own hands. Starting with a humble E87 116i, typically overlooked for its modest features, the transformation began.

Turning a Base Model into a Performance Beast

The 116i, known as BMW’s entry-level offering, served as a blank canvas for this ambitious project. By discarding the factory engine in favor of the potent N54B30 powerplant, the vehicle underwent a significant performance boost. The decision to retain the N54’s manual transmission highlighted the owner’s commitment to driving experience over mere speed.

Enhancing Handling with M3 Components

Following BMW’s strategy with the 1M, the build incorporated M3 components into the chassis, including the rear subframe, control arms, and brakes. Utilizing parts from the E90 M3 lineage ensured optimal handling capabilities for the revamped vehicle.

The front end received a facelift with 1M fenders, bumper, and headlights, seamlessly integrating with the E87 structure. However, creating a cohesive rear design proved challenging due to the lack of factory hatchback parts.

Crafting a Custom Widebody

The rear widebody construction involved merging two 1M bumpers to achieve a wider profile and elongating the sideskirts to fit the extended wheelbase of the E87. Additionally, relocating the battery enabled the installation of a shortened 1M exhaust system for a cleaner aesthetic.

Equipped with bespoke forged Style 359M wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, the vehicle boasted enhanced grip and stability, essential for accommodating the widened bodywork.

Experiencing the Transformation

Upon completion, the hatchback exuded a striking appearance reminiscent of the Z3 M Coupe, blending performance and versatility. Owner Zayed praised the car’s handling, noting its resemblance to a true 1M variant with added practicality. The unconventional design positioned the custom-built hatchback as a unique spiritual successor within the BMW lineup.
