Revolutionize Your Mac Desktop Organization with Gemini Spark – Worth the Investment
Google is striving to outpace Siri AI on its macOS Gemini app by introducing Spark, its own agentic AI tool that can now automate desktop workflows using Gemini.
While Google has had a dedicated Gemini app for iPhone since late 2024, its AI tool only became available on Mac in April. Prior to its launch, rumors suggested that Google was planning to incorporate “Desktop Intelligence” into the app — and it seems that the first glimpse of that is now here.
Google unveiled Gemini Spark at its annual developer conference, Google I/O, in May as a new tool for the “agentic AI” era. Despite Gemini being slightly behind OpenAI’s agentic tools, Spark boasts more features and efficiency due to its use of Google Cloud infrastructure. It relies on structured APIs rather than just web scraping, and is deeply integrated with Google Workspace, allowing seamless connection with apps like Gmail, Google Drive, and Calendar for automated workflows.
The addition of Spark to Gemini for Mac this week elevates the user experience, enabling automated tasks such as organizing the Downloads folder or converting receipts into a Google Sheet. This integration explains the purpose of the Gemini app as a native Mac tool.
Previously, Gemini for Mac was merely a wrapper for the browser-based version. While it offered quick access through keyboard shortcuts and could read static content from shared windows, it lacked deeper macOS integration.
With Gemini Spark, the app can now access the filesystem with user permission. Google ensures that Gemini only accesses files authorized by the user.
Currently, users can set up automations directly in the Gemini app on Mac, but Google is working on an update to allow remote task execution from an iPhone, even when the Mac is physically distant.
Users can assign multi-step tasks to Gemini Spark from their phone, such as locating a sales report on the Mac, extracting revenue numbers, and emailing the data — all executed on the computer while they are away.
Google is expanding Spark to integrate with more Google services like Tasks and Keep, as well as with Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals. These integrations will first roll out on web and mobile platforms before reaching the macOS app in the upcoming weeks.
However, Gemini Spark for macOS is currently in beta and exclusive to Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 and above in the United States, with a $100 monthly subscription fee. Google may eventually extend access to lower-priced tiers as the tool evolves.
While Apple’s Siri AI will offer similar functionalities for Mac users in macOS 27 Golden Gate, it appears to be lagging behind. Apple has yet to delve into the agentic AI domain, as demonstrated at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) where Siri AI interacted with files on Mac but required manual selection and input.
Although some users may prefer not to entrust AI with file management, Gemini for Mac provides the option for those seeking automation. Apple is expected to catch up eventually, integrating Siri AI more seamlessly into macOS, but it currently trails in agentic AI capabilities.
