Ephemeral Enigma: A Puzzle Game of Object Impermanence
Understanding Object Permanence: A Puzzle Game Review
As adults, we take for granted the concept of object permanence – the understanding that objects continue to exist even when we can’t see them. However, for babies, this concept can be a challenging one to grasp. This is where Object Impermanence, a unique puzzle game, comes into play. In this game, nothing exists unless you are actively looking at it.
Drawing inspiration from games like Portal, Object Impermanence requires players to manipulate objects in order to solve puzzles and progress through the game. Set on a mysterious alien planet, players must navigate through the ruins of a long-dead society, using alien-looking balls to unlock doors and overcome obstacles.

The key mechanic in Object Impermanence is the idea that objects cease to exist once they are out of view. For example, rolling a ball through a pipe will only work if you keep an eye on it through the gaps in the pipe. If you look away, the ball will stop rolling. This concept extends to other elements in the game, such as a sewer grate that can only be bypassed by turning away and walking backwards.
The gameplay in Object Impermanence is both clever and tense, with moments of suspense and surprise. The trailer showcases a close encounter with a speeding train car, which can be avoided by simply looking away. This unique mechanic adds a layer of complexity and challenge to the game, keeping players on their toes.
If you’re intrigued by the concept of Object Impermanence, you can look forward to its release in Q4 of 2026. In the meantime, you can wishlist the game on Steam and try out the demo for yourself. Get ready to test your perception and problem-solving skills in this innovative and immersive puzzle game.
