According to Doug Brooks, Apple’s senior product manager of Apple silicon, Apple’s Mac mini and Mac Studio have become the top choices for running AI agents. He mentioned that there has been a significant demand for these desktop Mac models due to the efficiency of Apple’s M-series CPUs. Brooks shared these insights in an interview with The Deep View before June’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

When it comes to agentic workloads, Brooks highlighted the need for a system that is independent, reliable, and capable of running continuously. He praised the Mac mini for excelling in these aspects.

The popularity of Macs among developers in the AI field can be attributed to the availability of AI tools that are either Mac-exclusive or prioritize Mac compatibility. Apple’s Neural Engine and neural accelerators in the M-series CPUs have been instrumental in enhancing AI performance on Mac devices.

Brooks emphasized that Apple’s approach to designing and optimizing its silicon for specific devices sets them apart from other silicon vendors. The tight integration between hardware, software, and system design allows for a more cohesive and efficient product development process.

Local AI processing, as advocated by Apple, is gaining traction due to privacy concerns and the increasing costs associated with cloud-based AI. Brooks envisions a future where AI agents will autonomously determine where processing should occur.

Reflecting on the rapid pace of AI development, Brooks acknowledged the unpredictability of the future landscape. He highlighted the importance of staying ahead of the curve and continuously innovating in the AI space.
