After nearly 19 years at Amazon Web Services, Dave Brown, who started as one of its earliest EC2 engineers and eventually led its compute, AI, and machine learning services, is set to depart at the end of July for a new role outside the company.

His departure was announced by AWS CEO Matt Garman in a memo to employees, with Amazon executive Dave Treadwell taking over the group on August 1.

Brown was promoted to senior vice president just three months before his departure, having been part of the senior leadership team at Amazon since 2023.

His journey at AWS dates back to 2007 when he joined as an EC2 engineer in Cape Town, South Africa, before moving to Seattle. Reflecting on the early days of the cloud, Brown remembered Amazon CEO Andy Jassy envisioning a billion-dollar future for the business, which now boasts an annual revenue of approximately $150 billion.

Over the years, Brown’s responsibilities expanded to include leading the compute organization, collaborating with Amazon’s custom silicon division, and overseeing the development of machine learning and AI services like Bedrock and SageMaker.

On the other hand, Dave Treadwell, who will succeed Brown, has a rich background in technology, having spent 27 years at Microsoft before joining Amazon in 2016. His tenure at Microsoft involved work on Windows, Xbox, and the .NET software framework.

In a memo, Garman praised Treadwell as a key internal customer of AWS who drove innovation within the cloud group.

As Brown prepares to embark on a new chapter, he will assist in the transition until the end of July. In his farewell message, he expressed his gratitude and pledged to support his former colleagues from the sidelines.
