A prominent figure in Amazon’s cloud leadership, Dave Brown, is set to join Meta, the parent company of Facebook, amid considerations to venture into the cloud business. The Wall Street Journal reported that Brown, who led AWS compute and AI services, will transition to Meta to contribute to its expanding data center initiatives.

Although Meta has yet to confirm its intentions of becoming a cloud provider, CEO Mark Zuckerberg hinted at the possibility. Shareholders were informed in May that Meta was exploring opportunities to monetize its AI models and computing resources, potentially entering into competition with existing cloud providers like AWS.

In his new role at Meta, Brown will report to Santosh Janardhan, the infrastructure chief, who co-leads Meta Compute, an initiative spearheaded by Zuckerberg to oversee the company’s data center expansion. With Meta’s projected capital expenditure of $125 billion to $145 billion this year, much of it dedicated to AI data centers, Brown’s expertise is expected to play a crucial role.

While Amazon has refrained from commenting on the reports of Brown’s move, Meta is yet to confirm the details. Brown’s departure from AWS was officially announced by AWS CEO Matt Garman, expressing support for his decision to pursue a new opportunity outside the company.

Notably, Brown’s transition comes amidst the evolving landscape of noncompete agreements in the tech industry. Legal restrictions on such agreements have become more stringent, with California and Washington imposing limitations on their enforceability, potentially impacting Amazon’s ability to restrict executive movements.

Dave Brown’s successor at AWS, Dave Treadwell, brings a wealth of experience from his tenure at Amazon and Microsoft. With a background in technology operations and a deep understanding of machine learning, Treadwell is poised to lead AWS Compute and ML Services effectively starting August 1.
