Amazon Shifts Focus: Cutting Jobs in AGI Group to Prioritize Customer-Facing AI
Amazon’s AGI Division Faces Employee Layoffs
Amazon recently confirmed that it has laid off employees within its artificial general intelligence (AGI) organization, which focuses on advanced AI models.
The company is currently investing heavily in AI programs to assist businesses in effectively implementing AI, including a $1 billion initiative to support customers in building agentic AI systems.
This strategic move by Amazon is part of a broader industry trend where tech giants and AI research labs are aiming to ensure that their significant investments in AI technology result in practical tools that businesses can utilize.
An Amazon spokesperson emphasized the importance of building large AI models while also highlighting the company’s focus on customer-centric initiatives to drive faster progress in key areas.
Despite its name, Amazon’s AGI group has primarily concentrated on cutting-edge AI models rather than on the theoretical concept of AGI, which would surpass human intelligence levels.
Key executives overseeing Amazon’s AGI work, such as Rohit Prasad and David Luan, have departed in recent months, leading to organizational changes within the AGI division.
The recent layoffs in Amazon’s AGI group follow a series of smaller job reductions since the beginning of the year when the company eliminated 16,000 positions across various departments.
Impacted U.S. employees will receive 90 days of pay and benefits, outplacement support, transitional health coverage, and severance packages as part of the company’s commitment to supporting its workforce during transitions.
