According to Zhavoronkov, Insilico Medicine’s fastest program achieved candidate nomination in only nine months, a remarkable feat compared to the industry average of about 13 months. Traditional approaches typically take around four-and-a-half years to reach the same stage.
The company’s innovative approach covers early discovery and candidate selection, marking a significant advancement in the field of pharmaceutical research. While the timeline does not encompass the entire process of bringing a drug to market, it highlights the crucial role of AI in accelerating candidate selection.
AI-Powered Candidate Selection Process
Insilico Medicine utilizes generative AI to identify biological targets, design potential drug molecules, and assess which compounds should progress to laboratory testing. This cutting-edge technology has revolutionized the way drug candidates are selected, allowing for faster and more efficient decision-making.
By combining AI-generated designs with researcher review and experimental validation, Insilico Medicine’s workflow has optimized the drug development process, leading to quicker preclinical candidate nomination within 12 to 18 months.
The company’s AI-supported approach has enabled teams to reach candidate nomination after testing a smaller set of synthesized molecules, showcasing the power of technology in expediting drug discovery.
Insilico Medicine has made significant strides in the field, generating 31 preclinical candidates since 2021, with 13 programs receiving investigational new drug clearances to advance towards human studies.

Rentosertib: A Breakthrough in Drug Development
One of Insilico Medicine’s notable achievements is the progress of Rentosertib towards Phase III trials. The oral drug, designed using AI technology, is being studied for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis—a significant milestone in the company’s journey towards commercializing innovative medicines.
The Phase III trial of Rentosertib, set to enroll 320 participants across 47 centers in China, aims to evaluate its efficacy in treating the progressive lung disease. The trial’s design and primary endpoints underscore the potential of AI-driven drug development in addressing critical healthcare challenges.
Insilico Medicine’s foray into Phase III trials marks a pivotal moment in its quest to bring AI-designed drugs to market, with Rentosertib paving the way for future breakthroughs in pharmaceutical innovation.
