Global Connectivity: Amazon’s Mission to Launch a Satellite Cellphone Network by 2028
Amazon Plans to Launch New Leo Satellite Constellation for Direct-to-Device Satellite Services
Amazon recently submitted an application to the FCC for the launch of a new Leo satellite constellation aimed at providing direct-to-device satellite services. This innovative system is designed to offer a wide range of services including voice, messaging, data, and emergency services. If approved, Amazon intends to deploy 5,105 satellites for the constellation starting in 2028. The company plans to collaborate with mobile network operators to provide this service, following a similar model to Starlink’s partnership with T-Mobile.
Amazon Expands Satellite Network with Acquisition of Globalstar
In a strategic move, Amazon announced the acquisition of Globalstar’s satellite network earlier this year. This acquisition includes taking over the deal to provide direct-to-device satellite services for Apple devices. By leveraging Globalstar’s spectrum, Amazon plans to collaborate with Apple on future satellite services and expand its network. The FCC application also includes a request to use spectrum from Iridium’s satellite network outside the US, amidst Rocket Lab’s acquisition of Iridium with plans for further expansion.
Amazon’s Vision for Enhanced Satellite Services
Amazon’s new constellation and direct-to-device service are set to complement the broadband services offered through its Leo platform. Beyond consumer satellite services, this technology will play a crucial role in disaster response and emergency messaging. The company aims to enhance performance by processing signals in orbit before relaying them through the satellites. The new constellation, nearly double the size of Amazon’s initial Leo system, is expected to consist of around 3,200 satellites, with over 375 satellites already launched as of July 2nd.
