Mercedes Strikes Back: Introducing the All-New GLA to Rival BMW X1 and iX1

Audi and Mercedes are both setting their sights on BMW with new releases this week. Following the debut of the Q9 to rival BMW’s X7, Mercedes is targeting BMW’s smallest SUV, the X1, with the all-new GLA. This third-generation model not only competes with the X1 but also introduces a fully electric version to replace the EQA.

The redesigned GLA features a larger grille with the iconic Mercedes star motif in the headlights and taillights. In a bid for efficiency, the traditional door handles have been replaced with flush handles to improve the electric vehicle’s range. The GLA now sits lower to the ground with an extended wheelbase and widened rear axle for a more imposing stance.

The updated model comes with 18-inch wheels as standard, with higher trims sporting 20-inch alloys. Key design elements like the illuminated grille and full-width rear light bar give the GLA a fresh look, distinguishing it from its predecessor.

The New Mercedes GLA Features Advanced Screen Technology

Similar to Mercedes’ latest models, the new GLA’s dashboard is equipped with multiple screens. The infotainment display and optional passenger screen are 14 inches each, while the driver’s instrument cluster is slightly smaller at 10.25 inches. These screens are housed behind a single glass panel, providing a sleek and modern look.

One standout feature of the interior is the optional panoramic glass roof with seven individually dimmable segments. This allows occupants to adjust transparency at the touch of a button, adding a touch of luxury to the cabin. The illuminated starry sky integrated into the glass roof further enhances the ambiance inside the GLA.

When it comes to practicality, the GLA offers 410 liters of cargo space with the rear seats up, a significant increase from its predecessor. Folding the rear bench expands the cargo capacity to 1,400 liters. The electric version of the GLA replaces the combustion engine with a front trunk, providing additional storage options.

Impressive Range and Performance in the Electric GLA Models

Mercedes is introducing the next generation of the GLA with electric drivetrains, offering up to 408 miles of WLTP range. Fast charging capabilities allow for quick energy replenishment, with a 10-minute charge adding 168 miles of range.

The electric GLA lineup includes models with varying power outputs and battery options. The base GLA 200 features a 221-horsepower engine with a 58 kWh battery, while the GLA 250+ offers 268 hp and an 85 kWh battery. The top-of-the-line GLA 350 4Matic boasts dual motors producing 349 hp, achieving impressive acceleration with all-wheel drive.

Mercedes plans to launch a fourth electric GLA variant with a 71-kWh battery in the near future. The electric models will hit the market in November, with hybrid options following shortly after. Prices in Germany start at €48,599 for the base GLA 200, offering customers a range of choices to suit their preferences and needs.
