Left Behind: Android 17 Installation Guide for Unsupported Phones

Many older devices still possess sufficient processing power for everyday tasks. Custom ROMs, such as alternative operating systems, offer a solution by extending the lifespan of smartphones, providing security updates, and eliminating cluttered manufacturer interfaces. With new web installers available in browsers, getting started with these systems has become easier than ever, despite the current division within the community.

GrapheneOS, known for its high security, exclusively introduces Android 17 to older Google Pixel phones. On the other hand, LineageOS, a more flexible option, supports over 100 models from various manufacturers with the established Android 16. The latest release, LineageOS 23, brings Google’s system to devices that no longer receive official updates.

The team is currently working on the next version, LineageOS 24, based on Android 17. However, as is customary within the community, a specific release date has not yet been determined.

LineageOS: Android 16 without bloatware

LineageOS is an alternative Android OS built on the open-source Android code (AOSP) and currently runs on Android 16 under LineageOS 23. Developed by an international community rather than a manufacturer, its goal is to keep smartphones updated longer and empower users with more device control.

Launched in 2016 as the successor to CyanogenMod, LineageOS has evolved into a prominent Android alternative. It supports a wide range of smartphones and tablets from various brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, Sony, OnePlus, and Google.

A key advantage of LineageOS over manufacturer software is its absence of bloatware, ads, or unnecessary services. Users have the freedom to choose which components to install. Additionally, those requiring Google services can opt for a suitable package, while others can minimize data sharing with Google by using the system without Google services.
