Key Highlights of BMW’s Global Sales Performance in the First Half of 2026

  • BMW sold a total of 1,004,669 vehicles worldwide in the first six months of 2026, marking a 6.2% decrease compared to the same period in 2025.
  • The X1/X2 model series emerged as BMW’s top-selling lineup, closely followed by the 3 Series/4 Series.
  • The Z4 exhibited a surge in sales during its final months on the market, outpacing the XM by a 2-to-1 ratio.

Despite seeing growth in Europe and the United States, BMW’s overall performance was weighed down by a continued decline in China. The company’s global sales figures for the first half of the year reflect a 6.2% dip compared to the same period last year. The mid-year report released recently sheds light on the successes and challenges faced by BMW up to June, revealing some unexpected trends.

Notably, the X5 and X6 models experienced a 1.9% increase in sales, reaching a total of 123,660 units. While the upcoming G65 launch generated anticipation, the existing G05 model attracted significant consumer interest, indicating a preference for the current generation. The X5’s historical dominance over the X6 likely contributed to this growth, with the transition to the G66 model scheduled for 2028.

Surprisingly, the entry-level X1/X2 crossovers surpassed the sales of the 3 Series/4 Series models by a narrow margin, hinting at a potential shift in rankings by year-end. The impending launch of the i3 electric sedan is anticipated to further impact BMW’s sales performance, with the First Edition already generating considerable demand ahead of the standard model’s release in September.

Spotlight on BMW’s Standout Performers in 2026

Bucking the trend of detailed model breakdowns, BMW’s global sales report combines related models, such as the X3/X4 series, which witnessed a notable 16.4% growth to 169,563 units. Primarily fueled by combustion-engine X3s and electric iX3s, the success of this range underscores strong consumer demand, particularly in Europe where orders have approached 100,000 units.

Despite the discontinuation of the Z4, the roadster saw a 2.8% sales increase to 5,706 units, hinting at ongoing interest in this segment. While a direct successor is not planned, BMW remains committed to niche offerings, evident in the development of an electric i4 Convertible slated for potential release in 2028 alongside the existing 4 Series Convertible.

Challenges Faced by BMW’s iX and XM Models

Among BMW’s lineup, the iX and XM models experienced the sharpest decline in sales, plummeting by 22.8% and 22.4%, respectively. Positioned at the bottom of the sales chart, these large SUVs are unlikely to see a second generation as their lifecycle winds down in the coming years.

The 7 Series/8 Series also registered a significant 20.6% decrease in sales, attributed to the discontinuation of the 8 Series and the recent facelift of the 7 Series. Anticipated improvements in the second half of the year are expected as production of the updated flagship model gains momentum in Dingolfing.

Looking ahead, BMW has planned major debuts for 2026, including the iX4 and the new 3 Series Sedan with combustion engines. While these launches may not impact the current year’s sales figures, they signify BMW’s ongoing commitment to innovation and product development.
