Zoox Receives Approval to Offer Robotaxi Rides for a Fee

Zoox has recently been granted permission to charge for rides in its unique, steering-wheel-less robotaxi vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made the announcement on Thursday, revealing that they have given Zoox a temporary exemption. This exemption allows Zoox to deploy up to 2,500 vehicles annually for the next two years, as reported by Reuters.

NHTSA Deems Zoox Robotaxis Safe

In their ruling, the NHTSA stated that Zoox’s robotaxis meet or exceed the safety standards of traditional vehicles compliant with federal regulations. As part of the exemption, Zoox will be under an “enhanced oversight condition” that will be updated and expanded as the company’s self-driving technology progresses. Earlier this month, Zoox issued a software recall for their vehicles due to concerns related to smoke detection.
