Enhanced Security Measures: macOS Sequoia & Sonoma Updates Now Available

Apple has rolled out updates for macOS Sequoia and macOS Sonoma alongside yesterday’s macOS Tahoe 26.6 update. These updates offer security and maintenance support for Macs that are unable to upgrade to macOS Tahoe.

Users of Macs running Sequoia or Sonoma can easily download and install the update by navigating to System Settings > General > Software Update on their Mac. The updates available will be compatible with your specific Mac model.

Typically, updates for older macOS versions do not introduce new consumer-facing features but focus on security fixes, performance enhancements, and stability improvements.

Apple usually supports the current macOS version and the two preceding releases. This ensures that users who cannot upgrade to macOS Tahoe or need to use older software or hardware incompatible with the latest OS are still covered.

With the impending release of macOS 27 Golden Gate in the fall, macOS Sonoma may soon cease to receive updates. Apple provided a preview of macOS 27 at WWDC 2026 last month, and it is currently in public beta testing before the official release.

What Issues Do the Updates Address?

Apple has published security documentation detailing the fixes included in the new Sequoia and Sonoma updates. These updates address a significant number of issues, many of which are also resolved in macOS Tahoe 26.6.

Security patches in the updates prevent unauthorized access to sensitive user data, thwart various remote hacking attempts, enhance security for the App Store and Apple Accounts against malicious activities, and more. The lists of fixes for older macOS versions mirror many of the issues addressed in Tahoe, indicating the recent discovery of these vulnerabilities that span multiple macOS generations.

Furthermore, Apple released Safari 26.5.2 on June 29 for Sequoia and Sonoma, addressing vulnerabilities in WebKit and web extensions that could compromise sensitive information, bypass web-content restrictions, or crash Safari and related processes.

On the same day, Apple also issued iOS 26.6 and iPadOS 26.6 updates, patching 78 security vulnerabilities. These patches, similar to the macOS updates, address various security flaws, some of which may not pose high risks. It is advisable for users to update their macOS Sequoia or Sonoma promptly to address these security concerns.
