Amazon Shifts Focus Away from MMOs

Amazon has made the decision to step back from the world of MMOs, announcing that it will be discontinuing work on its first-party AAA games, specifically in the MMO genre. This move includes transferring the live operations of Throne and Liberty and Lost Ark in the Western market to other companies. FirstSpark Games and NC will be taking over Throne and Liberty in Q4 of 2026, while Smilegate will be running Lost Ark starting in early 2027.

Changes in Amazon’s Gaming Strategy

In line with this strategic shift, Amazon’s development of the MMO New World: Aeternum has also been affected, with plans to cease offering new content updates. As of January, the game is no longer available for purchase, and it is set to be taken offline on January 31st, 2027.

Focus on Luna Cloud Gaming and More

Amazon’s current gaming strategy now revolves around its Luna cloud gaming service, as well as party games designed for TV play with mobile devices. These games include unique features such as AI-powered characters like Snoop Dogg and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Additionally, Amazon is delving into games that are tied to its other franchises, such as James Bond and Tomb Raider. In a recent interview, Amazon’s gaming chief elaborated on these new directions.
