Google’s New Feature Allows Users to Remove Visible Watermarks from AI-Generated Content

Google has introduced a new update that gives users the option to eliminate visible watermarks from images, videos, and music created using AI tools. This feature allows users to turn off the “Media watermark” setting in Gemini and Flow, Google’s AI video generator.

By disabling this setting, Google will remove the familiar “sparkle” watermark typically found in the bottom-right corner of content produced with Nano Banana and Omni models. Although visible watermarks are now optional, AI-generated content will contain invisible SynthID watermarks and C2PA metadata in the background, as confirmed by Josh Woodward, Google’s Vice President of Google Labs, Gemini, and AI Studio. This allows users to verify if a piece of content is AI-generated by querying Gemini or Search.

While this change may complicate the quick identification of AI-generated images or videos, many users have already been editing out visible watermarks. Other AI image generators such as OpenAI and Meta’s do not apply visible watermarks. OpenAI utilizes SynthID and C2PA to indicate AI-generated content, while Meta has introduced its own Content Seal standard. Anthropic has also announced the application of invisible watermarks to AI-generated text and images.

Google intends to extend this new watermark feature to Search, although it will not be available in countries where visible watermarks are mandatory.
