Enhanced Siri: Fresh Voices and Vibrant Icons
Apple has released the fifth betas of iOS 27 and its other operating systems, breaking from its usual two-week cycle with a three-week gap since the last beta. While the beta is currently only available to Apple Developer Program members, a public beta is expected to follow within the next 24 to 48 hours. The public beta will likely be identical to iOS 27 DB5, with any critical bugs ironed out before wider distribution.
As the final public release of iOS 27 approaches in less than six weeks, major changes are unlikely. However, Apple continues to refine the operating system, with the latest beta introducing some noteworthy tweaks. Here’s a rundown of what’s new.
Siri AI Enhancements
The fourth beta introduced new immersive voices for Siri in five additional English dialects: Australian, British, Indian, Irish, and South African. With iOS 27 DB5, customization options have expanded to include all seven American voices and the four British voices. Additionally, all voices now play an extended voice sample, even those in dialects that are not yet customizable for Expressivity or Pace.
Hi, let’s find the right voice for you. I’ll practice some things I like to say while you listen. Let me try this one out: You have one new message. Here’s another one: your timer is set for one minute. Now for some directions: at the next stop sign, turn right. How about some facts: otters have been known to hold hands while sleeping so they don’t drift apart. Let’s go around again, let me try this one out: You have one new message [repeats]
The voice sample has been slightly shortened in this update, removing a section about giving a recipe. Additionally, the sample now continues playing as you switch between voices, allowing for seamless comparison.
It’s worth noting that customizable voices require an Apple Intelligence-capable device with at least 12 GB of RAM, such as the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air.
Search Customization
A new section has been added under Settings > Search, allowing users to customize the number of app icons displayed when pulling down to open the Search from the Home Screen. Options include 4 Apps, 8 Apps, or Don’t Suggest, with toggles for Suggest App Shortcuts and Show Recent Searches.
Updated App Icons
Apple has made some tweaks to several app icons in this update, with changes ranging from subtle enhancements to wholesale redesigns. Icons for the Siri app and Remote app now feature a more detailed, photorealistic look.
These updates follow similar polish applied to the Maps, Photos, and Weather icons in the initial iOS 27 beta. Apple aims to give all icons a more layered look to align with the Liquid Glass aesthetic introduced in iOS 26, so further adjustments may be expected as the final iOS 27 release approaches next month.
