Exclusive Look at the Extended BMW i3 at the Chengdu Auto Show

In a surprising move for the typically quiet month of August, BMW has debuted the long-wheelbase i3 at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show. This model, designated “NA8,” boasts a larger size and luxurious features compared to the global “NA0” variant.

The Chinese i3 showcases a Le Castellet Blue exterior with black wheels and the M Sport Package. Notable differences include longer rear doors and a more expansive greenhouse. To comply with safety regulations, the sedan features traditional pull-up door handles instead of flush ones.

Adding to the aesthetic appeal is the M logo integrated into the rear pillar’s Hofmeister kink. Despite this sporty touch, the i3 40 xDrive on display is not a performance-oriented model, although M Performance variants may be on the horizon.

Enhanced Comfort and Features

The Chinese i3 boasts a substantial wheelbase of 3,005 millimeters, providing a significant increase in interior space compared to its global counterpart. At the Chengdu Auto Show, the model is equipped with Castanea artificial leather upholstery and a cutting-edge 3D head-up display.

The sedan’s trunk capacity is impressive, offering 420 liters of storage. Additionally, there is a front cargo area providing 31 liters of space. It remains to be seen if these figures differ for the Chinese version of the i3.

While pricing details for the i3 40L xDrive are yet to be disclosed, it is expected to be competitively priced. Speculations suggest it may cost less than the iX3 40L xDrive, which starts at RMB 299,900. There is also anticipation for a rear-wheel-drive 30 model at a lower price point than the iX3 30L.

BMW has a history of success with the i3 sedan in China, which replaced the hatchback model in 2022. Based on the CLAR platform of the 3 Series Li, the electric sedan has been well-received with a starting price of RMB 278,000.
