XPENG Secures $900 Million for its IRON Humanoid Robot Platform

XPENG, a Chinese electric vehicle maker, has successfully raised over $900 million at a valuation of $6.3 billion for its physical AI unit to expand its IRON humanoid robot platform. This funding round, completed through share purchase agreements with multiple investors, marks a significant milestone in China’s physical AI industry.

He Xiaopeng, Chairman and CEO of XPENG, emphasized the company’s dedication to in-house R&D over the past 12 years. He highlighted XPENG’s technological advancements in physical AI, including the development of the physical world foundation model, Turing AI chips, and AI infrastructure, paving the way for mass production and commercial deployment of advanced humanoid robots.

Despite this achievement, Xpeng’s shares have declined by 7.22 percent, with a 12-month decrease of 51.24 percent. The company faces growing competition in China from domestic manufacturers and Tesla in both domestic and overseas markets. Investors have valued XPENG’s robotics division at $6.3 billion, even as the parent company’s shares continue to drop.

IDG Capital Leads Funding Round with Tencent and Alibaba

IDG Capital spearheaded the financing round, with support from Gaorong Ventures, Tencent, and Alibaba as strategic investors. XPENG will retain control of the robotics business post-closure of the round, with the unit remaining consolidated in the group’s financial statements.

The capital raised will fuel long-term investments in full-stack physical AI development, enhance incentive programs for senior executives and staff working on robotics, and support software and hardware R&D for the unit. Additionally, funds will be allocated for data generation, mass production facilities, and global commercial expansion.

Inside IRON: XPENG’s Humanoid Robot Platform

At the core of XPENG’s physical AI strategy lies IRON, a humanoid robot designed with a fully-enclosed flexible lattice structure for optimal safety and appearance. IRON boasts 76 degrees of freedom in its body and 21 in each hand, showcasing high dexterity and mobility.

XPENG has developed IRON’s hardware platform, including chips and controllers driving core movement systems. With up to 2,250 TOPS of computing power distributed across three in-house-designed Turing AI chips, IRON can execute complex tasks with minimal latency. The robot’s human-like design enables it to collect behavioral data, adapt to environments, and efficiently perform tasks.

Expected to enter mass production by the end of 2026, IRON will initially be deployed in XPENG’s stores and campuses before wider distribution. Deliveries to customers in China and overseas markets are scheduled for 2027.
