"Development on the next Mass Effect is ending": EA is shutting down RPG veteran Bioware "to align talent and investments where we see the greatest opportunities for players and long-term growth"

Bioware, a Legendary RPG Studio, Announces Closure After 30 Years

Bioware, a renowned RPG studio, recently made headlines by announcing its closure after over three decades of crafting immersive role-playing games. Throughout its illustrious history, Bioware has been responsible for creating iconic titles such as Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Anthem.

In a surprising move, Bioware revealed that development on the next Mass Effect project will be coming to an end, leaving fans of the beloved franchise in shock.

The announcement of Bioware’s closure did not provide any specific reasons for the decision, nor did it mention the involvement of its parent company, EA, in making this drastic move. However, an open letter from EA’s Chief Operating Officer, David Tinson, and Chief Studios Officer, Cam Weber, shed some light on the situation, stating that the closure was part of a strategic effort to realign talent and investments towards areas with the greatest potential for player engagement and long-term growth.

Furthermore, the letter disclosed the cancellation of a project within The Sims series, known as project Lotus, in favor of prioritizing another project called Project Evergreen.

Despite the closure of Bioware, EA reaffirmed its commitment to investing in popular franchises such as its sports games, Apex Legends, Battlefield, and the upcoming Star Wars Jedi game. Additionally, a collaboration between Dice and Respawn hinted at the development of a new Star Wars: Battlefront game.

Reports from Bloomberg indicated that EA would be implementing 400 layoffs across the company, with 50 of them affecting Bioware employees.

Mark Darrah, a former Bioware employee who had been with the studio since its Baldur’s Gate era, expressed concerns about the challenges faced by studios producing large-scale games like Mass Effect Andromeda, Anthem, and Dragon Age: Veilguard. The high costs, lengthy production timelines, and the risk of underperformance posed significant threats to the studio’s stability. Notably, Dragon Age: Veilguard fell short of sales expectations, prompting EA to acknowledge its underperformance.

Furthermore, the timing of Bioware’s closure coincided with EA’s buyout by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, equity firm Silver Lake, and Affinity partners led by Jared Kushner. This $55 billion leveraged buyout not only took EA private but also added substantial debt to the company’s financial obligations. Anticipations of layoffs had been raised by unionized workers prior to the buyout, and the recent round of layoffs appears to be EA’s initial response to address the mounting debt.

While the future remains uncertain for EA employees, the company’s letter did not rule out the possibility of further layoffs in the coming months.
