Enhanced Passkey Integration for Multiple Platforms
Meta recently unveiled a significant security enhancement for WhatsApp, introducing an upgraded passkey system on August 25, 2026. This update allows users to create and utilize multiple passkeys for a single account, a feature that was previously limited to one passkey per account. With the new multi-platform capabilities, individuals using both iOS and Android devices can now generate and save unique passkeys supported by biometric authentication for each platform. By combining Android screen locks with existing on-device authentication methods like Apple’s Face ID or Touch ID, users can seamlessly and securely access their accounts across different devices.
Major Milestone Achieved with Additional Security Enhancements
WhatsApp also announced that the platform has surpassed 1 billion users actively using passkeys. To celebrate this passwordless milestone, the company introduced further security measures to combat potential threats like account takeovers and social engineering. The two-step verification process has been upgraded to allow users to replace their traditional six-digit numeric PIN with a more complex alphanumeric password containing special characters. Additionally, Android users will receive enhanced caller ID information for incoming calls from unknown numbers, providing details such as the caller’s country of origin or shared WhatsApp groups to help users identify potential scams before answering. Users can easily manage these security features within the app under Settings > Account > Passkeys.
