Apple Introduces New M6 Chip for Macs and M5 Ultra

Apple has recently unveiled its latest innovation in chip technology with the introduction of the M6 chip for Macs and the M5 Ultra. The M5 Ultra is being touted as Apple’s “most powerful chip ever,” specifically designed for demanding tasks such as 3D rendering and running cutting-edge AI models. The M6 chip represents Apple’s first foray into 2nm chip technology, promising significant improvements in performance and power efficiency. Notably, it features a Dual 16-core Neural Engine for handling on-device AI workloads.

Enhanced Performance and Features

The M6 boasts a 12-core CPU, an upgrade from the M5’s 10 cores, consisting of two super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores. Apple has made significant strides in CPU performance, claiming to offer the world’s fastest single-threaded performance and up to 1.2x faster multithreaded performance compared to the M5. Additionally, the M6 features a 12-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator included in each core, supporting up to 32GB of unified memory.

Introducing the M5 Ultra

The M5 Ultra utilizes Apple’s UltraFusion interconnect technology to combine two dual-die M5 Max chips into a quad-die architecture. This powerful chip features an impressive up to 36-core CPU with 12 super cores and 24 performance cores, an up to 80-core GPU, and a 32-core Neural Engine. It supports up to 512GB of high-bandwidth unified memory, offering unparalleled performance for demanding tasks.

Availability and Preorder Information

Apple has announced that the M6 chip will be featured in the upcoming Mac Mini, while the M5 Ultra will be integrated into the new Mac Studio. Interested customers can preorder these cutting-edge computers starting Tuesday, with the official release set for September 22nd.
