The Future of Lotus: A Sneak Peek at the 2028 Esprit

The highly anticipated Lotus Esprit, set to debut in 2028, is generating excitement with its promise of versatile powertrain options. In addition to the confirmed hybrid V8 model, buyers can also opt for a V6 engine, offering a lighter and potentially more accessible alternative.

Known internally as the Type 135 project, Lotus is committed to creating a lightweight supercar. The company aims for a curb weight of approximately 1.5 tonnes for the V8 variant, a challenging target for a hybrid vehicle expected to deliver over 1,000 horsepower.

The introduction of the V6 engine option holds particular significance, as it is also planned for integration into the upcoming Emira replacement model. Both the V6 and V8 powertrains are being developed by Horse, a powertrain company jointly owned by Geely and Renault.

Lotus has revealed that the Esprit will feature an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission designed to handle high torque efficiently, without compromising on weight. Production of the Esprit is expected to take place alongside the Emira at Lotus’ Hethel facility in the UK, with a scheduled launch in 2028.
