Breaking Boundaries: Ponda’s Successful Crowdfunding Campaign Raises €1.6 Million and Attracts 256 New Investors
Ponda, a Bristol-based biomaterials company, has successfully closed its latest crowdfunding campaign, raising €1.6 million (£1.4 million) in a Seed extension round that attracted 256 new investors. The company, focused on restoring wetlands through regenerative farming, had initially aimed to raise a minimum of €230k (£200k) with no cap, as stated back in April when the crowdfunding initiative was first announced.
Reflecting on the journey, the co-founders of Ponda – Julian Ellis-Brown, Nelly Tehari, Finlay Duncan, and Antonia Jara – expressed gratitude towards the community that has supported their mission. They highlighted the collaborative efforts with various stakeholders, including farmers, conservation groups, researchers, and manufacturers, that have contributed to shaping Ponda into what it is today.
The successful Seed extension funding comes amidst a wave of investment activity in European biomaterials, bio-based textiles, and circular-material technologies in 2026. EU-Startups has reported substantial funding rounds in the sector, with notable contributions towards innovative ventures like Sparxell, Salt & Fiber, Syntetica, and PaperShell.
In the UK, several biomaterials companies, including Epoch Biodesign, Naturbeads, Uplift360, and Mykor, have secured significant financing, underscoring the growing support for sustainable and eco-friendly solutions in the market.
Founded in 2020, Ponda specializes in developing high-performance natural fibers and insulation from wetland crops. Their flagship product, BioPuff, is created from bulrushes grown on restored peatlands, offering a renewable alternative for insulation in apparel and outdoor products.
The recent expansion of the Ponda team across agronomy, materials science, and business development reflects the company’s commitment to scaling its operations and bringing regenerative materials to market. The focus remains on expanding wetland farming and strengthening the supply chain to support the production of sustainable materials.
Through initiatives like harvesting across wetland sites in the UK and Europe, Ponda is demonstrating the potential for regenerative agriculture to create environmentally friendly materials at a commercial scale. The use of bulrushes through paludiculture farming showcases the company’s dedication to restoring degraded wetlands and promoting biodiversity.
As Ponda prepares for its next phase of growth, the company emphasizes the importance of community support in driving their mission forward. The crowdfunding campaign’s success will enable Ponda to launch new partnerships, expand product offerings, and continue advocating for healthier wetlands and sustainable materials.
Overall, Ponda’s innovative approach to biomaterials and commitment to environmental conservation highlight the potential for regenerative farming practices to shape the future of fashion, outdoor equipment, and beyond. With a growing community of investors and supporters, Ponda is poised to make a significant impact in the sustainable materials industry.
