Microsoft’s new Photos app includes your OneDrive, and iCloud galleries

Microsoft Revamps Photos App for Windows 11

Microsoft has introduced a redesigned Photos app for Windows 11, featuring a revamped editor and image viewer. This update combines photos and videos from your PC, OneDrive, and iCloud into a unified space. The goal of this new combined gallery experience is to streamline photo management and viewing, eliminating the need to switch between apps or devices. Additionally, Microsoft has focused on enhancing app launch and scrolling performance within the Photos app.

Streamlined Gallery Management

To merge galleries in the Windows 11 Photos app, users are required to enable Camera Backup in the OneDrive mobile app on iOS or Android. Furthermore, following Apple’s guidelines to configure iCloud for Windows is necessary. Once integrated into the Windows 11 Photos app, users can effortlessly browse by date, organize albums, search for specific photos using descriptions or facial recognition, and more. Both online and offline file browsing are supported, with Microsoft ensuring that photos remain accessible on the device even without an internet connection.

Enhanced Photo Editing Tools

The new Photos editor has been entirely reconstructed by Microsoft, resulting in a 25% faster launch time. Tools are now categorized into Crop, Enhance, Repair, and Stylize sections for improved accessibility. Notably, the Photos app now maintains HDR quality throughout the editing process and supports editing and saving HEIC and WebP images without altering their original formats.

Enhanced Viewer Experience

The image viewer in the Photos app has received a cleaner layout and performance enhancements, resulting in a 15% faster launch time and up to 30% faster opening of HEIC images, as stated by Microsoft. Additionally, support for media types has expanded to include SVG files. These updated Photos experiences are currently rolling out as an update for Windows Insiders on Windows 11, with a full release expected for all Windows 11 users later this year.
