Miami-Dade Police Speak Out Against Plans to Transform Miami into GTA 6: “We Fight Against What the Game Promotes”
The Mayor of Miami-Dade Proposes Turning the County into a Grand Theft Auto 6 Recreation
In a bold move, the mayor of Miami-Dade, Florida, has approached Rockstar Games with a proposal to transform parts of the county into recreations of areas from the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6. This initiative has sparked controversy among law enforcement and members of the judiciary, as GTA 6 is already inspired by Miami, creating a unique “simulation colonizing reality” situation.
The proposed plan includes hosting a grand publicity event at Miami International Airport, featuring immersive experiences such as signs for Vice City, planes adorned with GTA 6 branding, Metromover skytrains with GTA-themed designs, and even specially designed manhole covers.
While the mayor’s pitch aims to attract GTA marketing dollars and increase the regional circulation of Vice City enthusiasts, it has faced opposition from individuals such as Miami-Dade sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz and commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez. They believe that promoting a fictional version of their community defined by crime and violence contradicts the efforts to showcase the real Miami-Dade they have worked hard to build.
The original story was reported by The Miamian, revealing a pitch deck submitted to Rockstar on June 29th by the office of Miami-Dade mayor Daniella Levine Cava. A spokesperson confirmed discussions with Rockstar regarding potential opportunities around the launch of GTA VI.
Aside from the airport and transportation elements, the pitch deck proposes a visual installation at a dockyard inspired by GTA 6’s Port Gellhorn, featuring cargo containers, cranes, and cruise ships. It also mentions a “Vice City Motor Fest” showcasing classic cars, customized vehicles, and motorcycles in a family-friendly environment.
A notable aspect of the proposal is the “Vice City Radio Lab,” which combines local history with GTA elements, offering the community access to music production, podcasting, and video-game development resources. Rockstar has even stationed a team in Miami to absorb the city’s culture and gather insights from residents, including former criminals.
While the concept of recreating Miami-Dade in the image of GTA 6 has stirred controversy, with concerns about glorifying criminal behavior, the debate seems to be influenced by political affiliations. Mayor Levine Cava, a Democrat, is at odds with Republican figures like Cordero-Stutz and Bermudez, who are vying for support on funding proposals for the Sheriff’s Office.
Additionally, Chief Judge Ariana Fajardo and Clerk Juan Fernandez-Barquin have expressed reservations about featuring courthouses in a promotional campaign for a video game centered on criminal activities. Despite their concerns, they acknowledge the potential economic benefits for Miami-Dade County.
Overall, the proposal to integrate GTA 6 elements into Miami-Dade raises intriguing questions about the convergence of virtual and real-world spaces. While some view it as a commercial opportunity, others caution against glorifying criminality in the community. The ongoing discussions highlight the complex interplay between entertainment, culture, and civic responsibility.
As GTA 6 continues to generate excitement without a confirmed PC release date, the debate surrounding its real-world integration underscores the impact of video game culture on society. It remains to be seen how the narrative will unfold and whether Miami-Dade will embrace or reject the proposed transformation.
