Samsung taps Mistral AI models for semiconductor manufacturing

Samsung has collaborated with Mistral AI to implement on-premises models in its semiconductor manufacturing and engineering operations.

The partnership was announced during the bilateral state summit in Paris between South Korea and France. Samsung will incorporate Mistral’s software suite, including the Mistral Large model, into its internal semiconductor facilities to develop customized models for intelligence-driven factory infrastructure.

On-premises AI models for semiconductor fab infrastructure

The deployment involves utilizing private enterprise installations to handle sensitive engineering and operational data within Samsung’s computing perimeter. This setup ensures that proprietary technical information remains within the company’s infrastructure, avoiding external cloud exposure while retaining control over operational assets.

Young Hyun Jun, Vice Chairman and CEO of the Device Solutions (DS) Division at Samsung Electronics, stated, “Increasing complexities in AI chip design and manufacturing necessitate continuous innovation in semiconductor technologies.”

Mistral will supply Samsung with a specialized set of software tools to aid in the design and production of processors.

Arthur Mensch, co-founder and CEO of Mistral, commented, “AI is transforming how we create complex technologies, from silicon to software. We are delighted to assist Samsung Electronics with our expertise in electronics and semiconductors, enhancing the design and manufacturing of chips, and accelerating technical advancements in the global semiconductor and AI industry.”

Defect detection and yield stabilisation

Samsung aims to deploy targeted models directly for automated defect detection and fine-tuning of fab machinery. As semiconductor production processes progress, quick data analysis within the fab becomes crucial to maintain factory efficiency.

The company anticipates that the targeted AI models will expedite development cycles, enhance manufacturing accuracy, and stabilize production yields for advanced memory and logic chips. The operational range includes Samsung’s memory division, logic design units, and contract foundry business.

Samsung also spearheaded Mistral AI’s Series D funding round, obtaining a strategic equity stake to facilitate long-term technical collaboration.

This primary investment expands cross-industry cooperation between silicon manufacturers and AI developers in advanced memory, logic, and foundry operations.
