MINI embarks on a challenging adventure, crossing 1,500 miles of rugged western terrain without GPS, in a mystery model unveiled just before the journey begins.

MINI USA is gearing up to unveil a mystery adventure-oriented model at the Rebelle Rally, marking the brand’s inaugural participation in the prestigious event. While the vehicle has been fully prepped, MINI plans to keep it under wraps until a global reveal just before the rally kicks off on October 7, 2026. Behind the wheel will be Felicia Killman, accompanied by navigator Erika Ferrer. The duo recently got their first glimpse of the completed car and will embark on a challenging 1,500-mile journey through western landscapes. Currently, MINI is keeping details about the model, including its name, powertrain, and base, tightly under wraps.

Navigation Sans GPS

The Rebelle Rally isn’t your typical speed competition; it’s a test of navigation skills where GPS is strictly prohibited throughout the entire event. Participants must rely solely on maps and compasses, placing equal pressure on both the driver and navigator. The car’s infotainment system will remain inactive as Killman and Ferrer have honed their skills in various terrains, mastering throttle control, steering precision, and navigation techniques using traditional tools.

Killman expressed her excitement upon seeing the finalized car, marking a realization of the upcoming challenge. “We’ve undergone extensive training in diverse terrains and navigation methods, but soon it’ll be just Erika and me, the MINI, and 1,500 miles to conquer,” she remarked. Ferrer’s primary focus lies on navigation mastery rather than the vehicle itself. “While this rugged SUV is impressive, my training revolves around perfecting navigation skills, including terrain reading, compass reliability, and recalibrating bearings when needed,” she stated.

A Passion Project by BMW Group Engineers

The car’s meticulous preparation was overseen by BMW Group engineers James Wallace, Dennis Heaphy, and Eran Garma, who dedicated their time to this passion project alongside their regular responsibilities. The emphasis was on enhancing off-road durability rather than sheer performance. “Every component, from brackets to mounts, underwent rigorous testing to ensure optimal performance in extreme conditions far from paved roads,” Wallace explained.

Several renowned suppliers contributed rally-specific equipment:

• Thule: Provided a roof rack and cargo system for additional gear storage.
• DealerTire: Supplied a complete set of all-terrain tires along with spares.
• Pelican Cases: Offered weatherproof cases for essential team gear.
• Morimoto Lighting: Installed roof- and grille-mounted auxiliary lights for improved visibility.
• Heinlein Racing Development (HRD): Designed the skid plate and interior mounting systems, drawing from their experience in IMSA and World Challenge.

• GoPro: Equipped the team with cameras to document their journey from training sessions to competitive stages.

While the model remains unnamed, Ferrer’s description of a “rugged looking SUV” hints at its identity. Based on visual cues, it appears to be derived from the MINI Countryman U25 model.
