Revolutionizing Chip Design with AI: SPRIND and NADI Invest 40 Million Euro

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Germany’s SPRIND and the Netherlands’ NADI are investing 40 million euro into small research teams to accelerate chip design using artificial intelligence (AI).

SPRIND, Germany’s Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation, and NADI, the National Agency for Disruptive Innovation in the Netherlands, have joined forces for their first partnership program. Together, they will support and integrate AI into the development of chip design.

“The launch of NADI’s first program signals Europe’s commitment to leveraging collaboration and innovation. We anticipate more nations will follow suit in supporting pan-European breakthroughs. The necessity is evident, and the approach is effective,” stated Jano Costard, Head of Challenges at SPRIND.

“NADI’s objective is to catalyze breakthrough innovation in areas crucial for society and the economy. This collaboration with SPRIND on a strategic topic for the Netherlands and Europe is a significant milestone. SPRIND’s guidance to the Dutch government in establishing NADI has paved the way for us to benefit from their expertise,” remarked Jelle Prins, co-founder of NADI.

Promoting Europe’s Chip Sovereignty

The tech market is currently dominated by the US and China, especially in AI and chip sectors. Europe’s local industry must expand to meet growing demand amidst recent energy price fluctuations and supply chain disruptions.

Through the alliance of German research and industrial capabilities with the resources from the Netherlands’ thriving tech ecosystem and €33.6 billion semiconductor sector, SPRIND and NADI aim to enhance European chip design competitiveness globally and ensure domestic security.

Accelerating Chip Development

Traditionally, designing and developing new chips is a time-consuming process spanning several years. The integration of AI is expected to expedite this timeline significantly.

The Challenge is structured into two stages over 20 months:

  • Stage 1, running from November to July 2027, will select seven teams, each receiving €2.6 million.
  • Stage 2 will follow for the subsequent year, identifying three teams to receive €7 million each.

Furthermore, the program will facilitate knowledge exchange between technical and commercial experts to streamline the market introduction of innovative chip designs.
