The Cancelation of Armed Fantasia: A Spiritual Successor to Wild Arms

Armed Fantasia, a JRPG that was envisioned as a spiritual successor to the beloved PS2-era roleplaying series Wild Arms and helmed by Akifumi Kaneko, the former producer of Wild Arms, has unfortunately been cancelled. The parent company of Armed Fantasia’s publishers, 505 Games, Digital Bros, announced in a financial statement that the game, along with a sequel to the F2P strategy game Battle Islands and the action RPG Directorate Novitiate, has been discontinued.

The journey of Armed Fantasia from inception to cancellation was quite unique. Initially revealed in 2022 as part of a “Double Kickstarter” campaign alongside the JRPG Penny Blood, also inspired by a 90s/00s RPG series (Shadow Hearts), the goal was not to fully fund the games through crowdfunding. Instead, the campaign aimed to raise funds for proof of concept demos to secure traditional publishing deals for both games.

The Double Kickstarter campaign exceeded expectations, raising nearly four times the initial goal amount of ¥100,000,000, totaling ¥379,328,385. The success of the campaign led to Armed Fantasia being picked up by 505 Games.

However, Penny Blood faced challenges early on. In May 2024, developers Studio Wildrose filed a lawsuit against Japanese publishers Dangen Entertainment and their former CEO Ben Judd, alleging the withholding of production funds, including those from the Double Kickstarter campaign. While the legal battle is ongoing, Penny Blood is still in search of a publisher. A spinoff, Penny Blood: Hellbound, was released in 2024 to raise the brand’s profile.

Armed Fantasia seemed to progress smoothly but experienced a delay in its planned March 2025 release, leading to an indefinite postponement. With 505 Games deciding to cancel the project altogether, it appears that both Armed Fantasia and Penny Blood may not see completion despite their initial crowdfunding success.
