The Advantages and Disadvantages of Privacy Display Technology in High-End Smartphones

Privacy display technology has become a marvel of engineering, with companies like Xiaomi incorporating it into their high-end handsets such as the 18 Pro series. This feature not only blocks the view of the person next to you on a train but can also selectively block sections of the screen for notifications or floating apps.

Witnessing this technology firsthand at the Galaxy S26 pre-briefing in London left a lasting impression, making it the first phone hardware in a long time to elicit a “wow” reaction.

Despite its brilliance, privacy display technology comes with its set of downsides that need to be considered.

Upon the release of the Galaxy S26 Ultra, there was a significant debate regarding whether the screen quality was inferior to its predecessor. It turns out that altering the way display pixels function comes with certain compromises.

Users reported a decline in the overall experience even when the privacy display feature was turned off. Issues such as reduced brightness, limited viewing angles, and blurry text were prevalent. Some users even experienced discomfort or illness when looking at the screen.

Although advancements in display technology are expected in the future, current models incorporating privacy displays could address these concerns by making simple adjustments.
