Amazon’s Decision to Discontinue Fire Tablets: Failing to Meet Customer Demand

Amazon is phasing out Fire Tablets because they weren’t ‘giving customers what they were asking for’

Amazon to Discontinue Fire Tablets in Favor of Alexa Tablets, Confirms Head of Consumer Electronics

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Panos Panay, the head of consumer electronics at Amazon, announced that the company will be phasing out the Fire brand in favor of Alexa Tablets.

The decision to discontinue the Fire tablet line comes as Amazon looks to provide customers with a better overall experience. The new lineup will run on proper Android, rather than the custom Fire OS, and will have full access to the Play Store, a feature that was lacking on Fire tablets.

Previously, Fire tablet users had to access services like Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube, and Google Drive through the browser, as the official Google apps were not available in the Amazon Appstore. This limitation, along with the desire for higher-quality hardware and less intrusive advertising, led to the decision to transition to Alexa Tablets.

Panay emphasized that Amazon remains committed to providing security updates for existing Fire tablet users, ensuring that no customer is left behind. However, there are no plans for hardware refreshes in the Fire tablet line.

Looking ahead, Panay hinted at more hardware announcements from Amazon in the coming months. While there may be new devices on the horizon, he clarified that consumers should not expect an Amazon-branded computer or laptop.
