Reviving the Classic: The Citroen 2CV E-Nostalgia Budget EV
The Citroen 2CV Concept: A Modern Tribute to a Classic French Icon
The Citroen 2CV concept pays homage to the original French runabout, beloved by fans worldwide. This modern interpretation is set to hit the market by 2028, with a starting price of approximately €15,000 (A$24,000). Designed to meet E-Car regulations in Europe, this electric vehicle (EV) will join Citroen’s lineup alongside the Ami quadricycle and the e-C3.
Unlike previous retro revivals that saw significant size increases, the 2CV concept remains true to its roots. At 3.76m long, it actually comes in shorter than its predecessor, maintaining the compact charm of the original.
One of the key highlights of the concept is its focus on weight reduction, aiming for a one-tonne curb weight. This strategy allows for a smaller, more cost-effective battery, contributing to the overall efficiency of the vehicle.
Citroen’s design approach for the 2CV concept emphasizes simplicity and affordability. By incorporating flat surfaces, separate bumpers, and cleverly positioned air intakes, the production and maintenance costs are kept in check.
While drawing inspiration from the iconic 2CV model, the concept features modern elements such as an electric motor and battery. The exterior design echoes the original’s distinctive silhouette, complete with tall proportions, free-standing headlights, and a canvas roof.
The interior of the 2CV concept exudes retro charm with a contemporary twist. The dashboard, adorned with textured fabric, seamlessly integrates advanced technology expected in 2026. From the single-spoke steering wheel to the 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, every detail reflects a blend of nostalgia and innovation.
Notable interior features include the Radioën, a detachable radio that doubles as a speaker, and a digital instrument display positioned at the base of the windscreen. The cabin’s ambiance is enhanced by vibrant yellow and white tartan upholstery, complemented by hints of beige, wood, and bio-based plastic trim.
The whimsical touch of string lights around the fabric roof adds a Parisian flair to the interior, creating a unique and inviting atmosphere. The concept also hides playful surprises like a tortoise-adorned brake pedal and a rabbit-themed accelerator pedal.
While technical specifications remain undisclosed, Citroen promises a nostalgic driving experience by tuning the electric motor to mimic the sound of the original 2CV. Even the horn retains its classic charm, echoing the past with every honk.
The legacy of the 2CV dates back to the post-war era when Citroen introduced a revolutionary vehicle designed for simplicity and versatility. The original 2CV, unveiled in 1948, featured innovative elements like radial tires, a folding fabric roof, and front-wheel drive.
Over the years, the 2CV spawned various iterations like the Ami sedan, Mehari off-roader, and Dyane hatch, each adding to its enduring popularity. Despite being phased out in 1990, the 2CV’s legacy lives on through this modern reinterpretation.
While the revived 2CV may not make its way to Australian shores due to distribution changes, its global debut is sure to captivate enthusiasts and newcomers alike. This contemporary tribute to a motoring icon blends heritage with innovation, offering a glimpse into the future of electric mobility.
