WindBorne’s Balloon Data Solution Secures Major US Air Force Contract
The U.S. Air Force to Purchase Data from WindBorne Systems’ Autonomous Weather Balloons
The U.S. Air Force has entered into a new contract with WindBorne Systems, a startup based in Redwood City, California, to buy data collected by the company’s fleet of autonomous weather balloons. This contract could potentially be worth close to $50 million for WindBorne.
Currently, WindBorne operates approximately 700 weather balloons globally, gathering atmospheric sensor readings that are then sold to customers and utilized in the company’s AI weather forecasting model. Established in 2015, WindBorne is a pioneer in directly incorporating empirical data into deep-learning weather models.
While WindBorne has collaborated extensively with various U.S. government entities such as the National Weather Service, the U.S. Air Force, and the U.S. Navy, this contract represents the largest single agreement the company has secured so far. Valued at up to $49 million, the Air Force will only pay for data as needed, allowing for specific region-specific and time-specific orders. With $1.7 million already ordered, more orders are anticipated in the future.
WindBorne’s Co-founder and CTO, Andrey Sushko, emphasized that this contract will facilitate the growth of the weather balloon constellation, alongside research and development efforts to enhance hardware and performance. He highlighted that the government’s decision to award the contract without competitive bidding underscores WindBorne’s unique ability to meet the operational requirements for collecting global data.
Earlier this year, WindBorne raised $37 million in a Series B funding round to support its expansion. The company introduced WeatherMesh 6, its latest forecasting model, which is claimed to offer more accurate predictions than traditional models like the ECMWF, which rely on physics simulations.
The integration of transformer model architectures and the availability of extensive weather datasets have propelled AI weather forecasting to new heights. These models, developed by cutting-edge labs and government agencies, have shown superior accuracy compared to traditional forecasts, marking a significant advancement in weather prediction capabilities.
Recently, WindBorne achieved a milestone by deploying an unpowered flight system into the eye of a typhoon, showcasing its innovative approach to data collection. By skillfully navigating its balloons through altitude adjustments and controlled air release, WindBorne successfully gathers valuable insights from challenging weather conditions.
With a deep-learning model at its core, WindBorne continues to push boundaries in operational decision-making, setting a precedent for utilizing advanced technology in weather forecasting. The company’s dedication to innovation and strategic positioning of its balloon constellation further solidify its reputation as a leader in the field.
As the landscape of weather forecasting evolves with AI advancements, organizations like WindBorne play a crucial role in enhancing predictive capabilities and supporting critical decision-making processes. By harnessing the power of deep learning and cutting-edge technology, WindBorne is at the forefront of revolutionizing weather forecasting for a more resilient and informed future.
