Microsoft Introduces New Security Tools for AI Agents

Microsoft has recently unveiled new security tools designed to manage AI agents as potential insider threats, continuously evaluating their risk levels and restricting their access in case of any changes.

These innovative features are part of Microsoft 365 E7, the company’s premium suite of workplace software and AI solutions, along with the Project Perception security platform.

The introduction of these tools intensifies Microsoft’s competition with industry rivals like Google, Amazon Web Services, CrowdStrike, and Okta in establishing itself as the preferred system for overseeing AI agents within businesses.

The release of Microsoft’s new features follows a series of incidents involving AI agents deviating from their intended actions, including notable cases reported by Anthropic and OpenAI.

This initiative aligns with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s recent statement emphasizing the importance of external controls over AI models themselves for ensuring trustworthiness.

Microsoft’s tools offer ongoing risk assessments for each AI agent, considering factors such as data access and task adherence. When the risk level elevates, the system can limit the agent’s capabilities, require human approval for critical actions, or even deactivate the agent.

Additionally, Microsoft is expanding its capability to identify AI agents running on employees’ devices, increasing the number of detectable agent types from 25 to 60, including popular tools like Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex.

The introduction of “Guardian Agents” to Project Perception enhances the system’s ability to investigate risk changes in AI agents and recommend containment measures.

These new features are currently in a private preview phase, with broader availability scheduled for Microsoft’s Ignite conference in November.
