Google Prepares Firmware Update for Legacy Smart Speakers

Google is gearing up to release a new firmware version, 3.79.550760, for its older smart speaker models, such as Google Home and Nest devices. While there are no new hardware announcements, the company is focusing on enhancing the user experience for existing users.

The upcoming firmware update, available through the Preview Program, promises several improvements for legacy devices. These enhancements include:

  • Enhancements in audio and media streaming, as well as volume control
  • Improved setup and connectivity, addressing WiFi issues
  • Enhanced Google Assistant entry experience
  • Improved smart home control
  • Overall performance and stability enhancements

These changes aim to streamline the setup process, elevate sound quality, and enhance the smart home and Google Assistant experiences. Google has been testing these improvements on older devices like Google Home (2016), Google Home Mini (2017), Google Nest Mini (2019), and Google Nest Audio (2020).

If you own one of these older devices and want to experience these upgrades, you can access the new firmware by opening the Google Home app on your smartphone, selecting the relevant device, and clicking on the gear icon in the settings.
