Xbox’s Return to the Office: Four-Day Work Week Mandate
Microsoft Increases In-Office Work Requirement for Xbox Employees
Microsoft made a significant announcement to its employees regarding a change in the work-from-home policy. Last year, the tech giant had asked its employees to return to the office three days a week, but now, most Xbox employees are required to be in the office four days a week. The decision was based on feedback from Xbox employees, emphasizing the importance of creating more opportunities for collaboration and teamwork.
According to an internal memo obtained by The Verge, Jacinda Chislum Pearson, Xbox’s chief people officer, stated, “Starting February 1st, 2027, Xbox employees in Puget Sound living within 50 commuting miles of Studio D are mandated to work from the office a minimum of four days a week.” The proximity of thousands of Xbox employees to Redmond was highlighted as a key factor in the decision, making it easier to collaborate, address issues, and make decisions without the need for additional meetings.
This new requirement applies specifically to Xbox employees near Microsoft’s campus in Redmond, Washington. Pearson’s memo indicated that the current in-office practices for Xbox studios will remain unchanged, ensuring continuity in the work environment.
Microsoft had previously granted exemptions to certain roles for remote work, but employees with existing exemptions will need to reapply. The update on in-office work comes shortly after reports of potential Xbox layoffs, with Microsoft aiming to streamline operations and drive efficiency in its Xbox division.
Xbox’s revised policy aims to emphasize the value of in-person collaboration, especially for employees commuting 40-50 miles to the office. Pearson stressed the importance of leaders being physically present and actively engaging with teams, fostering a culture of problem-solving, teamwork, and shared experiences to strengthen the unity of the Xbox brand.
