John Collison Nominated to Join Microsoft’s Board of Directors

Stripe co-founder and President John Collison, known for his entrepreneurial and operational expertise in the technology industry, has been nominated to join Microsoft’s board of directors. This nomination was disclosed in Microsoft’s annual proxy statement, with Collison set to fill one of the two board seats opening up at the tech giant’s upcoming annual meeting on Dec. 8.

Extensive Experience and Expertise

Collison, 36, co-founded the Bay Area-based payments platform Stripe with his brother, Patrick, in 2010. Businesses using Stripe processed an impressive $1.9 trillion in payments in 2025. Collison’s nomination to Microsoft’s board is seen as a strategic move to bring in someone with deep expertise in technology and a track record of building successful platform businesses.

Board Composition Changes

Collison’s nomination comes as LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and Disney CFO Hugh Johnston, both board members since 2017, are stepping down. The proxy statement also mentions that Carmine Di Sibio, former EY CEO and a recent addition to the board, will stand for election by shareholders for the first time. With Hoffman and Johnston leaving and Collison joining, Microsoft’s board will revert to 12 members, the same number it had before Di Sibio’s appointment in May.

Insights from Satya Nadella

Collison’s interest in platform businesses and AI commerce was evident in his podcast interview with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. The conversation touched on making it simple for small merchants to leverage AI agents for selling without the need for complex technical setups. Nadella emphasized the importance of simplicity and accessibility in enabling businesses to thrive in emerging markets.

Shared Vision for Innovation

Nadella’s visit to Stripe’s office during his tenure leading Microsoft’s cloud business highlighted the alignment in vision between the two companies. He noted that Stripe’s approach to following developers and supporting startups resonated with Microsoft’s ethos, ultimately leading to the acquisition of GitHub in 2018. This shared commitment to innovation and developer-centric solutions underscores the potential for further collaboration between Microsoft and Stripe.
