The Truth Behind Kojima’s Alleged Offer to Create a Matrix Game
Back in the last century, there were speculations about Hideo Kojima potentially creating a video game based on The Matrix movie. However, the project never materialized, and instead, Shiny Entertainment developed Enter the Matrix and The Path of Neo, two well-received games set in the Matrix universe. Many gamers, including myself, have fond memories of playing Enter The Matrix during the holiday season.
A recent interview with Christopher Bergstresser, a former vice president of licensing at Konami Digital Entertainment, shed light on a meeting between the Wachowskis, Kojima, and executives from Konami. The Wachowskis, impressed by Kojima’s work, expressed their desire for him to create a Matrix game. However, Konami’s executive, Kasumi Kitaue, bluntly declined the offer, citing other commitments such as Metal Gear Solid 2.
UPDATE: Kojima has refuted claims of the supposed meeting with the Wachowskis regarding a Matrix game project. According to Kojima’s Twitter post, while he admired the Wachowskis’ work and had met them on multiple occasions, there was no formal offer made for a Matrix game collaboration.
Kojima continued to engage with the Wachowskis over the years, discussing their mutual interests and creative ideas. Despite not working on a Matrix game, Kojima found inspiration in The Matrix franchise for his projects, including the critically acclaimed Death Stranding.
Looking ahead, Kojima’s upcoming project, OD for Microsoft, is set to be an anthology horror game featuring renowned directors. With Jordan Peele already confirmed, there is speculation that the Wachowskis could also be involved in this innovative gaming experience.
