Google Lens powering new Screen Search in Chrome for iOS

Google has enhanced Chrome for iOS by deeply integrating Lens visual search with a new Screen Search feature similar to Circle to Search on Android. Additionally, Google Lens now has improved image recognition capabilities for more unique images.

Previously, Chrome on iPhone and iPad allowed users to take a picture or analyze a screenshot with Lens. Now, users can perform a “Search Screen with Google Lens” while browsing or watching videos. This new shortcut can be found in the three-dot menu, eliminating the need to manually take a screenshot.

When initiating a search, a shimmer effect appears on the screen, prompting users to “Circle or tap anywhere to search.” This feature mirrors Android’s Circle to Search functionality and will also be available in the Google app on iOS as “Search this Screen” in the top-right corner three-dot menu.

The Google Lens Screen Search feature is currently rolling out with Chrome version 133 for iOS and the latest Google app update.

Google attributes the enhanced image recognition in Lens to “advanced AI models,” enabling it to provide information on a wider range of unique images. This means users no longer have to manually ask questions, as AI Overviews will offer relevant information.

For instance, if you encounter an intriguing car and wish to learn more about a specific feature, simply tap the camera icon in the Search bar to capture a photo using Lens. The AI Overview will provide insights into the object, along with links to additional resources online.

The expanded image recognition feature is currently being rolled out to English-language users in regions where AI Overviews are supported. Initially available on the Google app for Android and iOS, this functionality will later extend to the desktop and mobile versions of Chrome.
