OpenAI Announces Trio of Advanced AI Models: GPT-5.1, GPT-5.1 Reasoning, and GPT-5.1 Pro
Exciting developments are on the horizon as OpenAI gears up for the public release of the GPT-5.1 family. This upcoming lineup includes GPT-5.1 (base), GPT-5.1 Reasoning, and GPT-5.1 Pro, catering to subscribers willing to pay a $200 monthly fee.
Insider sources suggest that the new GPT-5.1 models will soon be available on Azure, indicating that the official rollout is just weeks away. This timeline aligns perfectly with OpenAI’s established release schedule.
The predecessor, GPT-5, was launched on August 7, and OpenAI typically introduces a new model every three to four months. While GPT-5.1 may not represent a significant leap from GPT-5, enhancements in health-related functionalities and improved performance speed are anticipated.
Simultaneously, OpenAI has recently unveiled a new Codex model named ‘codex-mini-high.’
Codex Continues to Evolve
OpenAI’s latest addition, GPT-5-Codex-Mini, serves as a cost-effective alternative to the Codex model, offering comparable performance to Codex High with 50% higher rate limits. This version is designed for simpler tasks or as an extension for users nearing their rate limits.

OpenAI states that GPT-5-Codex-Mini allows for approximately four times more usage than GPT-5-Codex, albeit with a slight tradeoff in capabilities due to its more compact design. This update benefits ChatGPT Plus, Business, and Edu users with 50% higher rate limits, while Pro and Enterprise accounts receive priority processing for enhanced speed.
GPT-5.1’s introduction may unlock new performance thresholds for Codex, further enhancing its capabilities.
Notably, OpenAI isn’t the only entity working on a new model. Google is currently testing Gemini 3 Pro, and rumors suggest that a new Claude model is in the works.
