Aluminium OS will be Google’s take on Android for PC

Google’s Plans for Aluminium OS

Google has unveiled new details about its ambitious project to merge Android and ChromeOS into a unified operating system. This revelation comes from a recent job listing for a product manager role focused on “Aluminium OS,” described as an operating system centered around Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Android Authority was the first to report on this job listing, which gave a name or potential codename, “ALOS,” to Google’s upcoming OS. Aluminium OS is said to be Android-based, targeting a wide range of hardware devices from entry-level to premium. The job ad also hints at a transition strategy from ChromeOS to Aluminium OS, indicating a possible phase-out of the former in the future.

While Aluminium OS is on the horizon, ChromeOS is not slated for immediate retirement. The job listing outlines plans for a diverse lineup of devices running both ChromeOS and Aluminium OS, catering to different form factors and price ranges. However, the ultimate goal seems to be a gradual shift towards Aluminium OS as the primary operating system, potentially replacing ChromeOS altogether.

Noteworthy is the use of the British spelling “Aluminium,” reminiscent of Chromium, the foundation of ChromeOS. This choice of name may signify a connection to the underlying technology of the new OS.

Google’s plans to merge Android and ChromeOS have been in the works for years, with recent confirmation from Android head Sameer Samat about the development of a unified platform. The company aims to release this new OS in the near future, marking a significant evolution in Google’s operating system strategy.
