Indonesia’s AI Growth Accelerates with Microsoft’s Expanded Cloud Services

Indonesia is experiencing a surge in AI-led growth as local organizations increasingly seek to develop their own applications, upgrade their systems, and enhance data management. Microsoft’s recent expansion of cloud and AI tools in the Indonesia Central region has provided businesses, public entities, and developers with more options to run AI workloads locally, rather than relying on overseas data centers.

The announcement was made at the Cloud & AI Innovation Summit in Jakarta, where industry and government leaders convened to explore Indonesia’s potential in advancing AI technologies. Speakers at the event included Mike Chan, Azure AI Apps & Agents leader in Asia, and Dharma Simorangkir, President Director of Microsoft Indonesia, who emphasized the importance of leveraging local capabilities effectively.

According to Dharma, the newly introduced services offer opportunities for all organizations to innovate within Indonesia, catering to the country’s specific needs and challenges.

Shifting from Adoption to Creation

Many Indonesian enterprises are transitioning from basic AI experiments to developing custom tools that address their unique operational requirements. Microsoft identifies these organizations as Frontier Firms, which integrate AI into their core operations rather than treating it as an optional feature. These firms focus on creating applications that streamline customer interactions, enhance internal processes, or modernize existing workflows.

To support this evolution, the Indonesia Central region now hosts a diverse range of Azure services tailored to aid teams in designing and deploying software. These services include tools for building data-connected applications, managing structured data, and utilizing AI-powered virtual machines for advanced model training and execution. The availability of high-performance computing machines allows teams to handle complex AI workloads while keeping data within the country.

Early Success Stories in Microsoft Cloud Projects

Since its launch in May 2025, the Indonesia Central region has witnessed significant demand, with companies in various sectors such as mining, travel, and digital services leveraging local cloud infrastructure to modernize their systems and comply with stringent data regulations. Companies like Petrosea and Vale Indonesia are utilizing the region for technical upgrades and secure data storage, while digital-first enterprises like tiket.com are experimenting with AI applications to enhance customer experiences.

tiket.com, for instance, has developed an AI travel assistant using Azure OpenAI Service, enabling customers to interact with the platform using natural language for tasks like checking flight statuses and adding services post-booking.

Consolidating Data with Microsoft Fabric

Addressing the importance of data readiness for scaling AI initiatives, Microsoft introduced Microsoft Fabric to the Indonesian market. Fabric provides a unified environment for data engineering, integration, warehousing, analytics, and business intelligence, simplifying data preparation and insights generation for teams. By centralizing data sources, Fabric enhances governance, accelerates reporting processes, and optimizes costs for organizations.

Empowering Indonesia’s Workforce through AI Training

Besides infrastructure enhancements, Microsoft highlighted its AI training program, Microsoft Elevate, aimed at certifying 500,000 individuals in AI skills by 2026. The program emphasizes hands-on application of AI concepts in real-world scenarios and caters to a diverse audience, including educators, nonprofit professionals, community leaders, and individuals seeking to enhance their digital skills.

During the summit, Dharma underscored the significance of cloud and AI technologies in driving national competitiveness, emphasizing the importance of equipping individuals with the necessary skills to leverage these technologies effectively.

Commitment to Indonesia’s Technological Advancement

Microsoft has pledged a substantial investment of US$1.7 billion in Indonesia from 2024 to 2028, focusing on infrastructure development, partner support, and talent enhancement. The company is also gearing up to host GitHub Universe Jakarta, a developer-centric event aimed at fostering collaboration among software teams, startups, and researchers.

Indonesia aims to establish itself as a hub for secure and inclusive AI development in the region, with the recent expansion of the Indonesia Central cloud region and the introduction of new data and AI tools. By offering local AI infrastructure, resources for developers, and training opportunities for workers, Indonesia is laying the groundwork for sustained digital growth. As organizations transition from pilot projects to long-term AI integration, the country is poised for significant technological advancement in the coming years.
