2026 Toyota Corolla gets more space and sleeker styling, but not for Australia

Toyota has recently unveiled an updated version of its popular Toyota Corolla in China, featuring a refreshed front-end design and a more spacious interior. Unfortunately, this updated model will not be making its way to Australian showrooms anytime soon.

The redesigned Corolla was showcased at the Guangzhou motor show in China, with a scheduled launch in December for the Chinese market. This updated version is part of the existing 12th generation of the Corolla and is a result of a collaboration between Toyota and FAW (First Auto Works) in China.

On the other hand, the next-generation Corolla bound for Australia will be sourced from Japan and is expected to arrive in 2027. This model was previewed at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo and will offer various powertrain options, including hybrid, electric, and potentially hydrogen fuel-cell variants for select markets.

While the Australian specifications and equipment details for the new Corolla are yet to be confirmed, the Chinese-market version boasts a stylish redesign with a distinctive ‘hammerhead’ front-end treatment. This design language is consistent with other Toyota models globally, such as the RAV4, C-HR, Camry, and the electric bZ4X.

The updated Corolla in China features C-shaped LED headlights, a sportier front bumper, and new 17-inch wheel designs, along with a revised cabin layout and increased passenger space. The wheelbase has been extended by 50mm to 2750mm, resulting in an overall length that surpasses the current Australian model by 75mm.

Inside, the Chinese-market Corolla boasts a new center console, gear selector, and repositioned buttons, including air-conditioning controls now integrated into a larger 12.9-inch center touchscreen. Power options include a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine or a 1.8-liter four-cylinder hybrid with a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery.

It is common for Toyota to offer different versions of the Corolla tailored to specific markets. For instance, the Corolla sedan sold in Europe features distinct styling compared to its Australian counterpart. Additionally, Toyota offers variations of the Corolla sedan in China under the Levin and Allion nameplates.

While the updated Chinese-market Corolla will not be available in Australia, Toyota has confirmed the arrival of an updated GR Corolla hatch, the performance flagship, in early 2026. This model is expected to enhance the brand’s presence in the Australian market.

In conclusion, the Toyota Corolla continues to evolve with region-specific updates, showcasing Toyota’s commitment to meeting diverse market demands. Stay tuned for more updates on the upcoming Corolla models and explore the extensive range of Toyota Corolla options available.
