Microsoft recently unveiled insightful data on the usage patterns of Copilot, highlighting its diverse roles based on the time of day and device utilized.

A comprehensive analysis titled “It’s About Time: The Copilot Usage Report 2025,” delved into 37.5 million Copilot conversations from January to September, excluding enterprise and school accounts. The findings revealed distinct usage trends based on topic and intent, shedding light on how Copilot caters to various needs.

Notably, Copilot’s usage on desktop computers gravitates towards work-related queries and technical support during business hours. Conversely, mobile usage predominantly revolves around health inquiries throughout the day.

The study identified “Health and Fitness” as the most prevalent topic-intent combination on mobile devices, emphasizing Copilot’s role as a personal advisor beyond a mere search tool. Meanwhile, on PCs, “Work and Career” emerged as the primary focus during office hours, reflecting traditional work schedules.

Microsoft’s analysis delineated a dual usage pattern, portraying Copilot as both a professional ally on desktops and a personal confidant on mobile devices. This nuanced approach signifies users’ reliance on Copilot for diverse purposes.

Comparing data from January to September showcased a shift towards broader usage, encompassing culture and history discussions in addition to programming queries. This expansion indicates Copilot’s evolution from technical users to a more mainstream audience.

Insights from OpenAI and Anthropic corroborated similar consumer behavior, showcasing a growing reliance on AI assistants for guidance and information across various domains. Microsoft’s Copilot study underscored the distinct roles AI plays based on the device used, catering to professional and personal needs.
